Do you know the 3 biggest mistakes that most new bloggers make? Most bloggers don’t know this or if they know it they don’t think it’s a big deal. These are the fatal flaws in their business and marketing strategy and the biggest reasons why 90% of new blogs fail. New website owners are dooming themselves to failure before they even get started and they don’t even know it.
The 3 biggest mistakes are:
Failure to Optimize For Google Search
SEO (Search Engine Optimization)
Google search is the #1 way to find ANYTHING online. Amazon has dominated eCommerce search and Google has dominated reference search.
This kind of goes without saying, and it seems obvious, but I see bloggers starting blogs all the time and they are not optimized or search at all or very little. All the information about how to do proper SEO is out there FOR FREE but some people still fail to optimize their sites.
There are plenty of SEO plugins and free tools that will do almost everything for you and will tell you everything you need to do. One such tool is Yoast SEO plugin for WordPress. Everyone who does their own SEO knows this is hands down the #1 free SEO plugin out there. There’s also a premium version that is well worth the money. (No I’m not saying this because I was paid to say it.) I use it, and every good blogger uses it, or at least uses a similar SEO tool.
20 years of SEO experience has made me a bit jaded and unforgiving of bloggers who don’t optimize for search. It’s almost as if they’re asking to fail and then use that as an excuse to hang their blame instead of their own negligence. Sorry is that sounds harsh, but i think it has to be.
In my opinion there’s only one reason to own a blog. Money! That’s what it comes down to. And if you don’t optimize your blog you are leaving money on the table.
SEO is NOT as complicated as people make it out to be. It really isn’t. But I will qualify that statement with this disclaimer. It’s not complicated if you know what you’re doing. Search engine optimization is highly technical. It’s also very time consuming. I’ve literally spent thousands upon thousands of hours optimizing my sites and the sites of my clients in many different niches and over 20 years and hundreds of websites you can imagine the amount of time that has taken.
Optimize your blog to rank high in Google. First page is good. Second page…not so much. Third page? Well…
Play the long game. Optimize for 30, 90, 180, and 365 days out.
When you write content, write timeless content. That’s not as hard as it sounds. You can still write relevant content that will always be relevant by focusing on the basics. And believe it or not, the basics are all you need.
You don’t need to pay thousands per month for professional SEO. The professional SEO consultants won’t like the fact that I’m telling you that because that means you won’t ned their services anymore, unless you have more money than time. In that case go ahead and spend the money and have someone do your SEO for you.
But, if you’re like me, and like the idea of a passive income stream by spending the time and doing the work today so you can reap the passive income rewards tomorrow, next year and well into the future, then do your own SEO.
Thats what this site is about. Teaching you how to do for free what would normally cost you tens of thousands of dollars.
Look at it this way.
Invest the time now! Look at your time as money. If you had money you would not be reading this, you’d just pay an SEO consultant to do it for you. But you don’t have the money and you want to make steady easy money with the free traffic you get from SEO to monetize your blog and make a dependable passive income for years to come.
That is why I created EZMoneyBlog.com because that’s exactly what it is. An easy money blog. It’s an experiment to get on the first page of Google for the term SEO, Search Engine Optimization, and Passive Income.
Maybe I shouldn’t give away my secrets because people will copy me and I’m creating competition for myself, but the way I see it, most people aren’t as crazy dedicated to this as I am. They’re not willing to put in the time and energy and effort and work and long tedious hours of modifying code and writing and researching and doing what needs to be don to rank high in Google.
I will be on the first page for the highly competitive keyword phrase SEO.
In fact that acronym, SEO, is probably the most competitive keyword in the search engine optimization and online marketing world. It’s the kind of the mountain keyword and I will rank TOP 10 for it. One day.
I don’t care how long it takes. A year, 3 years, 5 years? I don’t think so.
Within one year this site will be ranked top 10 on the first page in Google search for the keyword phrase SEO. Watch! Bookmark this page, come back often. Check Google for EZMoneyBlog.com and you’ll see it in the top.
The point is not to brag, but to show you how easy it actually is. Easy doesn’t mean fast. Easy doesn’t mean it’s not tedious. It means, EZ Money from Blogging, optimizing for Google with the long term goal of generating a solid dependable passive income.
A passive income that you don’t have to work for anymore.
Failing To Optimize For Speed (Mobile Development)
Optimize your blog for speed or your blog is dead! It’s imperative you optimize your blog to load fast on mobile devices. You have 3 seconds! That’s it. And even that might be too long. 2 seconds? People are lazy and impatient. There’s too much out there on the internet to distract people from quality content. It doesn’t matter how good your content is, if you page doesn’t load fast and serve the content quickly people will click away and go somewhere else, never seeing your content and certainly never sharing it.
Make your pages SCREAMING fast by optimizing your entire blog. There are loads of tools out there, commercial paid premium versions and free tools that will analyze your blog and tell you what you need to do to speed it up.
#3 Failing to Build a Targeted Email List
Building a HUGE email list should be #1 on your list of things to do when you start a blog. Some people will argue against this. They will argue about it, write blog posts about and make videos saying how wrong I am, or they’ll argue that building an email list is not that important or it’s not as important as I make it out to be. But guess what…
ANYONE that says that is ABSOLUTELY 100% WRONG!
Millions of bloggers and website owners neglect their email lists to their own detriment. They fail before they even get started. Some bloggers and inexperienced part time eCommerce site owners neglect to build their email lists and newsletter lists and in doing so they are missing out on a huge opportunity to not only engage with their site visitors, they’re letting visitors leave their site without getting their contact information. This is leaving money sitting on the table. You NEVER want to leave money on the table.
Get the contact information of your site visitors. Capture the name and email from every visitor. There are lots of ways to do this, and I go into detail about How to build and grow your email list in another article. This article will focus on the WHY you should have an email list if you don’t have one already.
Most bloggers who are serious about making money online already have some kind of email list. If you don’t, stop what you’re doing now and go sign up for MailChimp. (yes that’s my affiliate link, yes I get paid if you sign up, yes you will thank me later for making you setup your email list with a reputable email management service like MailChimp. There are others like Constant Contact, and OptInMonster and AWeber. I’ve used AWeber in the past and I like them, but recently switched over to MailChimp because I like MailChimp’s user interface and their services better. The details about each email management platform are beyond the scope of this article.
Build your list! Build your list! Build your list! I can’t stress this enough. I firmly believe that this is by far one of the most powerful, if not the single most powerful marketing tool online. The power of email marketing is absolute and unmatched in my opinion. Whether you have a blog or an eCommerce store on Shopify or Amazon, a well built, highly targeted opt-in email list will pay dividends above and beyond any other marketing tool accept for maybe PPC advertising. PPC is powerful if you know what you’re doing…but you must be careful not to lose money.
Email marketing is almost free. It only takes time. Sure you have to pay for the service like MailChimp or Constant Contact, but it’s well worth the cost if you use your list a lot. You build rapport and relationships with people on your email list. You can engage with them on a more personal level, and communication isn’t forced. It’s more relaxed and it’s easier to build trust through email with someone you have never met. It’s easier to close the sale too.
You can use email marketing to drive traffic to your blog or eCommerce store with special offers, discount coupons and limited time offers. This creates a sense of urgency, and your list members are more likely to purchase a product advertised in an email from someone they know and have a relationship with than another website they are only just visiting.
Also, there’s a sense of belonging, that your email list members are members of a club and they get VIP treatment. They are special and you treat them like they are. You give them information, news, and updates, and from time to time you share an opportunity to purchase something that will help them. It’s a WIN/WIN.
This is about your clients and customers getting what they want. After all, they signed up on your list because they WANT something. Give them what they want and they’ll reward you with the sale.
Monetize Your Blog
Failing to monetize will kill your blog before you ever get started. Failing to monetize your blog will make you fail, period. You must monetize your blog otherwise why are you blogging? Whether it’s with a selling access to members area, selling digital or physical products, selling services, selling advertising, or placing advertising on your site, you must monetize your blog. Sell affiliate products and services. Drive traffic with social media. Pay for advertising to drive traffic. Optimize your site, do the SEO you need to rank high in search engines.

Whether you monetize with advertising, direct email marketing, or have an eCommerce store, you must monetize your site. Otherwise y
This is a big one! People don’t like to “sell”. People will say things like…”Well, I don’t want to sell!” People that say anything like that are going to fail. Sorry, but if you don’t want to sell then get out of business because all business is about selling. All businesses must SELL to survive! Revenue is the lifeblood of every business. Without revenue, without an income, a business will die. You must sell to keep your business alive. Some folks are saying “DUH! I know that!”, if so you’re ahead of the curve.
You would be amazed at how many people want to make money online with their online business, but they don’t have any inclination nor do they want to sell. I don’t understand that. Is there a disconnect there? Is there something wrong with their brain? Why in the world would you start a business and then say “I don’t want to sell.”. Really? Then close the business because you don’t deserve success. That sounds harsh but harsh is life and business. The fact remains. Selling brings in revenue and revenue is the lifeblood of business.
Some folks think selling is a bad thing. More and more though I’m seeing this old idea and archaic mindset going away. Newer bloggers and eCommerce store owners are realizing the importance of selling in their business and are embracing it. They are learning how to sell and that is a good thing.
Those that refuse to sell should just shut their blog down because it’s clear they don’t really want to make money online. In fact, people that truly believe that don’t deserve money. You must be deserving of money to earn it. You earn it by selling. Even writing content is selling. You’re selling the content for time on your site, likes, shares, comments, and backlinks.
Write good quality content and you’ll get more for your content. Simple premise really.
Selling starts with building your email list because the reason you build your email list is to sell your products, services, or provide information. But it’s much more than just your email list. Your blog, your eCommerce website, your Shopify store or Amazon store, is an online business and you must look at it like one.
If you started your blog to make a living online then you must acknowledge that you are in business and that your blog is your business.
